The compact yet rugged Fuso Canter was the ideal truck for Jack Cotterill Tree Services. The company provides arboricultural services, including pruning, felling, stump grinding, hedge trimming, vegetation clearance, and emergency tree removal to residential and commercial clients nationwide.
Tough as a truck and small as a van, the Canter immediately caught the eye of the Droitwich-based operator, who added three new 3.5-tonne 3C13 models with specialised arboriculture bodies that include large lockable toolboxes and high-sided tippers.
“We’d been running a pair of van-based vehicles and a 4x4 pickup, but they had become unreliable, so I was looking to replace them with something better suited to our work,” says Jack Cotterill. “I already knew the Fuso Canter was a popular choice in our industry, and when I came across some adverts on my phone, I could see it was exactly what I was looking for. It has the rugged ladder-frame chassis I wanted and, although I also considered another model, the Canter’s cab-forward design, which allows for a smaller overall footprint, was a clear advantage.”
Fuso Canter Capabilities
The tree service’s new Canters are powered by 3.0-litre 130-horsepower (96-kilowatt) turbodiesel engines that produce 360 newton-metres (265 pounds-foot) of torque. The compact exhaust system complies with Euro 6 Step-E regulations. Fuso says the Canter has the smallest turning circle in the 3.5-tonne class, 10.2 metres (33.4 feet), with a wheelbase of 2,500 millimetres (98.4 inches), giving it a high degree of manoeuvrability. The steel ladder frame provides strength for a higher load-bearing capacity.
Enhanced safety features include the Land Departure Warning System, Sideguard Assist, LED lights, and more. The reinforced rear underride guard protects against rear-end collisions. Operators can ride in comfort with an adjustable steering wheel, an Isringhausen ergonomic driver’s swing seat, and ample storage.
“The trucks are every bit as well-suited to our needs as I’d hoped,” adds Cotterill. “They’re often loaded up to maximum payload and pulling another 3.5-tonne on a trailer, but are never short of power. They’re super-manoeuvrable, too, which makes life easier, as the sites we have to work on often have tight access points. I’m delighted with the choice we made and would not swap these trucks for anything.”
