General haulier Bower Green of Bradford, West Yorkshire, recently replaced some of its Volvo trucks with three new Volvo models, specifically 460-horsepower (338-kilowatt) FH Aero 460 tractors with I-Save fuel-saving features, Globetrotter cabs, and 6x2 configurations. The distinctively styled FH Aero has a cab 240 millimetres (9.4 inches) longer than standard, which contributes to its aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
Bower Green expressed plans to drive the new Volvos up to 120,000 kilometres (75,000 miles) annually across the UK. The replacement vehicles maintain the status quo of 20 Volvos in the transporter’s fleet of 24 trucks.
“We are thrilled to welcome the new FH Aeros to our fleet,” says Bower Green Managing Director Alan Pattison. “The FH Aero’s new design was an immediate attraction for us, and when combined with our bold yellow and purple livery, the new trucks will certainly stand out on the road. The enhanced aerodynamics will contribute to improved fuel efficiency, plus they give the vehicle a modern and dynamic image that reflects our brand’s identity.”
I-Save Increases Fuel Efficiency
Bower Green’s new FH Aero 460 tractors are fitted with the I-Save package, which is a combination of engine and transmission enhancements, technologies, and exterior air deflectors to boost fuel economy.
The I-Save package’s Euro 6 diesel engine uses turbo-compounding technology, which allows the driver to maintain a lower rpm and a higher gear for longer periods on the road. The D13TC Step E engine in Bower Green’s new FH tractors produces 460 HP and 2,600 newton-metres (1,918 pounds-foot) of torque.
Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox, another piece of the I-Save package, shifts gears at optimal times using real-time speed, weight, road grade, and torque data. “The driving experience—especially the I-Shift gearbox—is second to none,” Pattison says. I-Save also comes with Volvo’s I-See predictive cruise control, which adjusts to gradient changes ahead to lower fuel consumption.
Volvo Camera Monitoring System
Bower Green’s new Volvos have enhanced factory paint and Alcoa Dura-Bright aluminium wheels. Inside the Globetrotter cabin is a one-person Living package with a parking heater, a 33-litre (1.16-foot3) refrigerator, and extra storage. The Drive+ package adds fully electronic air conditioning, leather upholstery, and dual armrests on the driver’s side.
“Our drivers have always been particularly impressed with the comfort and functionality of their Volvo cabs, which makes their time on the road much more enjoyable,” Pattison says.
The new FH Aeros also came with an improved sound system and Volvo’s new Camera Monitoring System, which, like Mercedes-Benz’s MirrorCam, replaces external mirrors with video cameras to improve aerodynamics while increasing the driver’s field of view. Bower Green’s new Volvos were supplied by Crossroads Truck and Bus.
The Volvo FH
Volvo’s FH long-haul 4x2 to 8x4 tractors and 4x2 to 10x4 rigid trucks are designed for aerodynamic efficiency and reliable service. Its 420- to 540-HP (313- to 403-kW) engine options support diesel, bio-LNG, biodiesel, and HVO fuels. There are also FH Electric trucks with up to 657 HP (490 kW) and 300 km (186 mi) of range.
The FH offers five cabin options, from a low sleeper cab to a high-roof Globetrotter XXL configuration. The user-adjustable Volvo Dynamic Steering feature reduces steering effort, helps avoid skidding and unintentional lane changes, and even allows for remote-controlled steering.
