Joseph Parr (Alco) recently acquired a new Volvo FM Electric 6x2 rigid to its fleet, marking the first zero-emission heavy-duty truck deployed by a builders’ merchant in the UK. The FM Electric will operate primarily from Parr’s Bradford depot, completing back-to-base customer deliveries and operations in Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, and Manchester.
“Regulations across the industry are changing and we want to ensure we are ahead of the curve in terms of new green technologies,” says Michael Beaumont, joint managing director at Joseph Parr (Alco). “Despite the additional weight of the batteries, we actually see a slight payload advantage over the traditional 26-tonne diesel trucks we run. That was an important factor as we are pretty much up to full weight every time our trucks go out.”
About The Volvo FM Electric
The FM Electric has four batteries to provide enough range and payload capacity for Parr’s building materials deliveries. The rear steer tag axle electric truck is built on a 5,200-millimetre (205-inch) wheelbase and is fitted with a Palfinger BM 26 crane. The truck has a gross vehicle weight of 28 tonnes (31 U.S. tons). Its two motors generate 450 horsepower (330 kilowatts).
Joseph Parr (Alco) will charge the truck overnight at its depot on a 43k-W AC charger to be ready for the next day’s deliveries. The FM Electric, swathed in Jospeh Parr’s Naval Blue livery, has a day cab, Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels, chassis side skirts, and two amber roof beacons.
The zero-emission truck has a 300-kilometre (186-mile) range and up to 490 kW of power, depending on the configuration. The batteries charge in 9.5 hours with a 43-kW AC charger or 2.5 hours with a 250-kW DC charger.
