Fred Sherwood Transport recently added two new Volvo FH Electric 6x2 tractor units to its fleet as part of a push to increase the company’s operational sustainability. The 44-tonne (48.5-U.S.-ton) emissions-free electric trucks have specially designed walking floor trailers for waste and recycling operations near the company headquarters in Shepshed, Leicestershire.
“We are working hard towards our sustainability ambitions, that’s the reason we have gone down the electric route,” says Fred Sherwood Group Director Justin Sherwood. “These two FH Electrics are exciting additions to our fleet. We have the right routes to make electric work and we are looking forward to seeing how they bed in. They are already drawing a lot of interest from our customers, who are keen to understand how they can help them to hit their own green targets.”
About The Volvo FH Electric
The FH Electric is equipped with six batteries for a range of up to 300 kilometres (186 miles). The truck’s three electric motors generate 666 horsepower (497 kilowatts) and 2,400 newton-metres (1,770 pounds-foot) of continuous torque. Like its diesel counterpart, the FH Electric has the standard I-Shift gearbox for a smooth ride. The truck has Forward Collision Warning with Advanced Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning systems to keep drivers and other road users safe.
Fred Sherwood’s trucks are specified with the Globetrotter cab with the Drive++ package for operator comfort. Cab amenities include leather upholstery, dual seat armrests, an adjustable steering wheel with neck tilt, and a 33-litre (1.16-foot3) fridge mounted under the bunk. Fred Sherwood’s FH Electrics will initially run 290 km (180 mi) daily and charge overnight at the depot, where the company has two new 43-kW AC wall-box chargers. These chargers will be powered by solar panels installed on the workshop roof.
