Waste management company Biffa recently acquired its first electric skip loader, an 18-tonne Volvo FE Electric 4x2 rigid, which will operate on the Isle of Wight. Biffa was founded in 1912 and today operates a commercial fleet of 4,000 vehicles with more than 100 depots in the UK. The FE Electric is one of 104 new Volvo vehicles purchased by Biffa recently as part of a fleet modernization programme. The trucks are deployed at locations throughout the UK.
About The Volvo FE Electric
Biffa’s FE Electric is mounted with skip loader bodywork and powered by two electric motors that offer up to 225 kilowatts (300 horsepower) of continuous power and peak torque of 850 newton-metres (627 pounds-foot). The truck has a 2-speed transmission, a traction control system that keeps it going even on slippery surfaces, and a variety of drive modes that allow the operator to set performance, comfort, and energy usage levels.
The truck’s four batteries produce up to 375 kilowatt-hours of energy for a range of about 190 kilometres (118 miles). Batteries can recharge in 2.3 hours with a 150-kW DC charger. Depending on battery configuration and use, the FE Electric can have a range of as much as 275 km (170 mi). The FE Electric is available in 4x2 or 6x2 configurations with all air-suspended axles. Buyers can fit the truck with a day cab, a short sleeper cab, a sleeper cab, or a low-entry cab.
“As a business, we have more than a century’s worth of experience in helping our customers keep their environment clean, and are committed to reducing our carbon footprint,” says Biffa Fleet & Facilities Director Anthony Holley. “Central to this is the transition of our fleet to alternative fuels, and naturally we wanted to be amongst the first fleets to gain real-world experience of operating an electric truck.”
