Daf’s New Generation XB series recently made its UK debut at the London EV Show at ExCel London in November. The London EV Show, now in its third year, is an international trade show and conference for the electric vehicle industry with panel discussions, exhibits, test drives, and hands-on demonstrations from more than 300 leading companies and startups. DAF’s show exhibit was a 12-tonne XB Electric.
Daf XB Electric Specs
The XB Electric is available in 12-, 16-, and 19-tonne (13.2-, 17.6-, and 21-U.S.-ton) gross vehicle weights (GVWs). The 12-tonne XB Electric showcased at the London EV Show has a single-step entry, a 4.3-metre (14.1-foot) wheelbase, a 120-kilowatt e-motor, and 210-kilowatt-hour batteries for a range of up to 200 kilometres (124 miles).
The New Generation XB Electric’s motor provides 120 or 190 kW of nominal power according to GVW, with nominal torque of 950 or 1,850 newton-metres (700 or 1,364 pounds-foot). The battery packs are cobalt and magnesium-free lithium ferro phosphate high energy density batteries that deliver 141 to 282 kWh with a driving range of up to 350 km (217 mi).
Charge At Your Own Pace
The Daf XB Electric has a Combined Charging System that offers slow and fast charging options. The truck can be charged through the regular electricity network, ideal for overnight charging after it returns to base. The batteries can charge from 20 to 80% in 40 to 70 minutes with 650-volt DC fast-charging, depending on the specification of the battery pack.
Passive & Active Safety
The XB is equipped with the latest in advanced driver assistance systems, including Drive-Off Assist, Daf Side & Turn Assist, a rearview camera, speed limit recognition, tyre pressure monitoring, Daf drowsiness detector, and an event data recorder.
The Advanced Emergency Braking System uses both radar and a camera to detect vehicles and vulnerable road users. The system alerts the driver when road users are in front of the truck through Drive-Off Assist. Side Assist sends an alert when a road user is to the nearside while Turn Assist warns of cyclists in the truck’s blind spot.
The new drowsiness detection can assess the driver’s alertness and provide alerts when a break is necessary. The Event Data Recorder saves images and data when an AEB event occurs or when the collision time with another road user is under half a second. Safety is further enhanced with the low cab positioning, large windscreen and side windows, and low window belt lines which improve visibility. An optional Kerb View Window is also available for unobstructed views of road users from the co-driver’s side.
