Yellow Volvo FH 540 Ready To Move Yellow Iron For Campbell Plant Hire

Campbell Plant Hire of Inverness recently added a brand-new Volvo FH 540 6x2 tractor unit to its delivery fleet to transport heavy plant equipment across the Scottish Highlands. The truck replaced one from another marque, and Director John Maclachlan says driver preference factored heavily in the purchase.

“He’s a big Volvo fan, and we were only too happy to provide him with the tools he likes when it came to upgrading his truck,” says Maclachlan. “Our driver also really likes the I-Shift gearbox.”

The new Volvo FH 540 is capable with heavy loads, another point in its favour. “The terrain can be challenging—further north and out to the west there’s a lot of single-track roads and hills, we need a truck that can deliver on performance,” Maclachlan says.

    Impressive Inside & Out

The new Volvo FH 540 is a 6x2 tractor with a sleeper cab that’s typically attached to a Nooteboom trailer. Both the Volvo tractor and Nooteboom trailer are decked out in Campbell Plant Hire’s striking yellow livery; the FH 540 is also decked out in matching yellow side skirts and bumper spoiler, factory-fitted roof air horns, and Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels.

“This is the biggest truck we have and will be shifting some pretty heavy equipment all over the Highlands and onto the islands as well,” says Campbell Plant Hire Director John Maclachlan. (Photo courtesy of Volvo.)

Campbell Plant Hire specified the FH tractor with Volvo’s D13K Euro 6 engine, which generates 540 horsepower (397 kilowatts) and 2,600 newton-metres (1,918 pounds-foot) of torque from 1,000 to 1,450 rpm. “This is the biggest truck we have and will be shifting some pretty heavy equipment all over the Highlands and onto the islands as well,” says Maclachlan. “We opted for the 540-HP engine to give us a bit more power, which allows us to deliver quicker journey times for our customers.”

    Comfort On The Road

The new tractor’s sleeper cab includes the cozy amenities of Volvo’s Living+ package, which among other things provides interior lighting with a night light and dimmer, a 33-litre under-bunk refrigerator with freezer, and 154 L of upper storage in the rear cab. “And we opted for the flat sleeper cab rather than the Globetrotter because a lot of places we go have low branches and low bridges,” explains Maclachlan.

You’ll find hundreds of new and used Volvo trucks for sale on Truck Locator, including a big selection of FH tractors and rigids.
