The Enfield Council recently received the first of four Renault E-Tech D Wide trucks with CP Davidson Titan refuse bodies. The all-electric, 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton) refuse trucks, which should all be on the road by summer, will service the North London borough and be charged at Enfield Civic Centre or the Morson Road depot.
“Enfield Council has been working in partnership with Renault Trucks UK for more than a year on the development of the electric refuse truck,” says Councillor Rick Jewell, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for environment. “Prototypes went through extensive testing and road trials right here in Enfield. We were extremely happy with how the vehicles performed in our waste collection operations, demonstrating high performance and reliability even along our longer routes. This performance is critical for a large, busy London borough.”
Reliable Refuse Service & More
Renault fits the new E-Tech trucks with four lithium-ion batteries and two electric motors that together deliver continuous power of 260 kilowatts (349 horsepower) and peak power of 370 kW (496 HP). The E-Tech D Wide trucks are expected to cover between 80 to 161 kilometres (50 to 100 miles) per day, well within their 315-km (196-mile) estimated range. In addition to the battery-electric refuse trucks, the Enfield Council has purchased five 3.5-t (3.9-U.S.-t) Renault E-Tech Master trucks with cage tippers for the borough’s park operations.
Moving Forward With Climate Action
The new Renault E-Tech trucks are part of a major fleet makeover to reduce emissions. By 2026, the Enfield Council wants 60% of its vehicle fleet to be electric, and the target number increases to 100% by 2030.
“Emissions from transport in Enfield account for an estimated 39% of the borough’s total emissions,” says Councillor Ergin Erbil. “The electrification of our fleet, along with ongoing support for walking and cycling, will help to achieve our local climate action goals as well as the Mayor of London’s targets for active and sustainable travel in the capital.”
