Volvo Trucks recently delivered its first fully electric, heavy-duty concrete mixer to construction materials company Cemex. The landmark FMX Electric truck will operate at a Cemex ready-mix concrete plant in Spandau, Berlin, and represents a step forward in the company’s emissions reduction strategy.
“Cemex is committed to becoming a net-zero CO2 company; innovation and collaboration are at the core of this commitment,” says Cemex CEO Fernando A. González. “Our partnership with Volvo has incredible potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of our business. Rolling out our first fully electric ready-mix truck is a strong progress in that direction.”
FMX Electric Concrete Mixer
The heavy loads and continuous mixing typical to concrete transportation are major barriers to electrification, yet Volvo says its new FMX Electric concrete mixer can provide a full day’s work with one top-up charge during its shift. Cemex’s new concrete mixer boasts two electric motors that together deliver 330 kilowatts (443 horsepower) of power, and the mixer body is powered by a hydraulic system designed to use power from the truck’s traction battery. The truck is equipped with four batteries in total, packing 360 kilowatt-hours of capacity. The concrete mixer’s superstructure can transport 9 cubic metres (318 cubic feet) of material.
FMX Electric Options
Volvo offers the FMX Electric in a variety of tractor and rigid axle configurations to fit the application at hand. Tractor units are available in 4x2 and 6x2 configurations, while rigids expand the options to 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2 tridem, and 8x4 tridem. Gross combination weights for the FMX Electric can reach 44 tonnes (48.5 U.S. tons) and load capacities up to 23 t (25.4 U.S. t) are available. The FMX Electric has a maximum range of 300 kilometres (186 miles).
