Denmark’s first fully electric crane truck for waste collection is at work in Copenhagen. The electric Scania 25L, operated by global waste management company Urbaser, has a combined crane and compactor construction. All components, including the chassis, crane, and waste compactor, are electric and the crane can perform a full day of work on a single charge. The crane truck is employed primarily to empty underground waste containers in the city’s new districts of Nordhavn, Sydhavn, and Amager.
How The System Works
Residents in the areas sort waste into as many as 10 bags and dispose of them in the appropriate nearby underground containers. To empty the containers, the 25L uses its crane to lift them from their concrete shafts and swings them over the waste compactor. The bottom of the container is opened to let the waste fall into the compactor. Once the compactor is full, it is driven to the incineration plant to be converted into energy and heat for the district. The remaining sorted waste is taken to local recycling centres.
About The Scania 25L
The Scania 25 L has nine battery packs for a gross capacity of 297 kilowatt-hours, which is often more than enough for a day’s routes. In the first three months of operation, the city of Copenhagen has found that at the end of the day, even after powering both the driving of the truck and the compactor’s hydraulic system, around 40% of battery capacity still remains, aided by regenerative braking, which sends energy back to the batteries. The 24.5 t/m Fassi crane has its own battery pack with electric power take-off and 86 kWh of battery, enough to complete a full day on one charge.
The electric truck has three axles with a low cab forward L-cab and an electrical steer bogie axle behind the draw axle. It has a maximum output of 295 kilowatts (396 horsepower) and 2,300 newton-metres (1,696 pounds-foot) of torque at peak load and 230 kW (308 HP) and 1,300 N-m (959 lbs-ft) continuously. The 4,750-millimetre (187-inch) wheelbase provides enough space for nine lithium-ion batteries which can be fully charged in less than 100 minutes.
