J W Cantrell Haulage Contractors of Stoke-On-Trent recently went from trial to investment with the purchase of five tipper trailers from Schmitz Cargobull. After purchasing a demonstrator at an exhibition, Managing Director Derrick Cantrell was impressed enough to buy five more S.KI 24 3AT 9.6-metre trailers. Each vehicle is projected to log approximately 60,000 kilometres (37,300 miles) per year. The new tipper trailers join a mixed commercial vehicle fleet of 17 engaged in the transport of incinerator bottom ash around the Midlands.
About The S.KI 24 3AT Trailers
Each vehicle has a rounded steel body and an adaptive chassis for the three-axle tractor unit. The flat, wide floor offers a low centre of gravity for more stability and tipping safety, and the rounded shape ensures goods slide out easily. The trailers are also compliant with the UK’s 44-tonne truck rules. The tippers are designed to provide the largest possible payload with a 6-millimetre (0.24-inch) steel floor and 5-mm (0.20-in.) steel sidewalls for a 36cubic-metre (47-cubic-yard) capacity. The trailers also have a full LED lighting system, Alcoa alloy wheels, and a manual PVC roller top sheet.
“Once tried and tested, I had to go back to Schmitz Cargobull again,” says Cantrell. “The payoff between a good payload and a strong trailer is a very fine line, but I think Schmitz Cargobull get it spot on.”
“I’ve been hugely impressed with how the vehicles are managing our heavy-duty loads,” Cantrell continues. “We were using aluminium trailers before and spending far too long doing costly repairs on them because the materials we carry are very abrasive and wear the bodies out. The steel bodies of the S.KI tippers are proving to be very durable and have helped massively in reducing maintenance time and costs. I’ll be looking to get many years of use out of them.”
