With 39 new Volvo FE 250 road sweepers due to arrive before 2022 ends, Leicestershire-based Go Plant Ltd will soon replace a large group of machines from another marque in its 300-strong fleet. The 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) 4x2 rigids are equipped with Bucher Municipal sweeper bodies and Volvo’s Drive package, which adds air conditioning, cruise control, an electrically operated roof hatch, and front overhead storage space.
“We run a variety of marques in the fleet and looked at three in total for this latest order, but it was Volvo which came out on top,” says Go Plant Fleet Services COO Mark Gallimore. “We know they always provide us with a robust chassis with a proven track record in sweeper applications.”
Sweeping Across The UK
Go Plant expects each of the Volvo FE 250s to travel around 25,000 to 30,000 kilometres (15,534 to 18,641 miles) per year, and the trucks should be in service for at least six years. Their Volvo D8K diesel engine delivers 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) and 950 newton-metres (700 pounds-foot) of torque. For increased safety and visibility, the trucks have Volvo’s factory-fitted lower kerb window on the passenger door. Drivers ride in comfort in the spacious sleeper cab on an air-suspended driver’s seat boasting an adjustable shock absorber and lumbar and heat controls.
More On The Volvo FE
Volvo FEs are designed for city delivery, regional distribution, refuse collection, and construction applications. The FE offers a rounded, aerodynamic design and comes in four cab variants including a low-entry option. Engine outputs range from 250 to 350 HP (261 kW) and 950 to 1,400 N-m (1,030 lbs.-ft.) of torque. In addition to the diesel powertrain, Volvo offers the FE in compressed natural gas (CNG) and all-electric models. The latter features two electric motors producing 225 kW (300 HP) and offers a range of 200 km (124 mi).
