Ford Revamps Ranger Raptor Pickup With New Engine & Off-Road Running Gear

Ford’s all-new Ranger Raptor, the high-performance, off-road variant of the Ranger pickup, is equipped with a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine producing 288 horsepower (212 kilowatts) and 491 newton-metres (362 pounds-foot) of torque. Performance is further enhanced with Ford’s anti-lag system that keeps the turbochargers spinning for up to three seconds after the driver backs off the throttle, allowing for faster resumption of acceleration.

“We’ve really focused on delivering a genuine performance truck with the all-new Ranger Raptor,” says Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer for Ranger Raptor. “The 3.0-litre engine brings a different dynamic to the Ranger Raptor that will satisfy even the most hardcore performance enthusiast. It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and it’s the toughest Ranger we’ve ever made.”

    Off-Road Components

Ford redesigned the suspension and reinforced the chassis on the Ranger Raptor to handle off-road conditions. Compared to the standard Ranger, the Raptor offers hardier mounts on the C-Pillar and load box, while the frame offers additional reinforcements on the jounce bumper, shock tower, and rear shock bracket. Ford also equips the truck with Fox 2.5-inch Live Valve internal bypass shock absorbers.

“The suspension upgrades in the Ranger Raptor make the most of the new Fox Live Valve dampers,” Burn says. “The suspension adapts in real time to enable exceptional on-road body control while absorbing corrugations and bigger ruts off-road with ease, ensuring maximum control and performance.”

“It’s significantly faster, looks incredible, is packed with new features, and it’s the toughest Ranger we’ve ever made,” says Dave Burn, Ford Performance chief programme engineer for Ranger Raptor. (Photo courtesy of Ford.)

    All-Terrain Modes

The advanced four-wheel drive system on the new Raptor Ranger boasts an electronically controlled, on-demand two-speed transfer case, as well as front- and rear-locking differentials. These components can be configured using the Ranger’s seven drive modes, which include four off-road-specific modes: Rock Crawl, Sand, Mud/Ruts, and Baja. Baja mode is designed for maximum off-road performance at high speeds. On-road modes include Normal, Sport, and Slippery.

“While Ranger Raptor was inspired by desert racers, it’s also a supremely capable overlanding vehicle,” says Burn. “Out of the box we’ve created an off-road vehicle that you don’t need to modify to get you where you need to go and back again safely.”
