SRC Group of Essex provides aggregate and cement, delivers construction materials, and provides waste disposal services with a fleet of 140 tippers. Of those trucks, SRC says 90% are Scania rigids, and the favourite Scania at the firm is the P 370 8x4 XT. Operating as safely as possible is of major concern for SRC Group, and the P-Series cab offers enhanced visibility to protect vulnerable road users and drivers with its low dashboard and A-pillar optimised for side-angle field of vision. These and other factors earned the trucks a three-star Direct Vision Standard rating, which allows them to operate in London.
"In addition to the truck's safety credentials, air quality is another area of concern for us, and here Ultra Low Emissions Zone compliance is high on our priority list—the Scania P 370 ticks that box as well," explains SRC Group Managing Director Oliver Rees. "Over and above all of this, there's no question that the Scania is a very good product all round.”
A Workhorse On The Jobsite
Most of the Scania tippers in the fleet feature Abba lightweight tipping bodies to help maximise loads. SRC Group upgrades the P 370 tippers to the XT configuration for additional performance. “The XT specification gives us the durability and robustness we need and I have to say, the truck looks great; it's a very desirable vehicle,” says Rees. “Our rigid tippers are quite high-mileage for our industry; on average, each covers around 95,000 kilometres a year.”
Despite the comparatively high usage, SRC Group has found there’s strong demand for used Scania tippers. “They have a reputation as an extremely solid workhorse and that's a view which is widely held throughout our industry,” says Rees. “Consequently, disposing of them easily, and achieving a good price in the process, is part of the attraction of running the Scania brand."
The Scania P Series
Scania says its P-series trucks are optimal for urban operations, thanks to the wide field of vision and proven design in demanding applications. They are available with 7-, 9-, or 13-litre engines covering a wide range of power levels; Scania’s 7-litre engines start as low as 220 horsepower (164 kilowatts) and the 13-litre Euro 6 engines reach up to 500 HP (373 kW). The wide engine selection is matched with a comprehensive gearbox range to fit each truck’s intended application. Chassis configurations for the P series include tractor units and rigid trucks in various front, rear, and steered tag axle designs.
