Last year, Nuneaton-based KC Construction purchased two pre-owned Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3240 tippers with Palfinger Epsilon M125L cranes and Kinshofer clamshell buckets. The building, construction, and groundworks contractor recently returned to its local dealer Midlands Truck & Van for a brand-new Arocs 3246 eight-wheeler with upgrades to improve performance, increase driver comfort, and take advantage of the latest Mercedes-Benz technology.
“We’ve gone for the bigger cab and more powerful engine, and have also added some extra features,” says owner Kevin Casson. “For example, the SM UK camera system has been integrated with the Multimedia Cockpit, so we don’t need an extra screen, and we’ve also specified Thompson’s on-board weighing system. The new truck is a great flagship for our business.”
Top-Level Trim
KC Construction’s pre-owned Arocs are equipped with a 394-horsepower (290-kilowatt) engine; the new Arocs boasts the top-rated 455 HP (355 kW) variant of the 10.7-litre, six-cylinder power plant. To provide driver Ben Thompson more space, the new Arocs 3246 is configured with the M-cab vs. the short S-cabs on the Arocs predecessors.
“My Arocs feels as though it’s built to carry weight over challenging surfaces—off-road it takes the bumpiest terrain in its stride,” says Thompson. “I also like the new dashboard, which looks great and is really easy to operate.”
Mercedes-Benz’ MirrorCam has also proven to be a benefit for Thompson, who says “The fact that the cameras are mounted on the roof means that on narrow lanes I’m not dragging them through hedges, while the lenses don’t get anything like as dirty as mirrors when I’m working in a quarry. Plus, of course, removal of the mirrors also eliminates a big forward-facing blind spot.”
Designed For Construction Applications
The rugged features of Mercedes-Benz Arocs make it well-suited for a wide range of construction applications, especially the jobsites where KC Construction trucks operate. “The Arocs performs particularly well in quarries, where the suspension system excels and the high ground clearance also helps,” says Casson. “At around 16 tonnes, payloads are pretty good too. It’s extremely robust and ideally suited to our kind of work.”
All three of KC Construction’s Arocs are equipped with ClassicSpace cabs, and the rugged truck is also available in BigSpace, CompactSpace, and StreamSpace day and sleeper cabs. Axle configurations range from 4x2 to 8x8, and Engine options range from 235 to 617 horsepower (175 to 460 kilowatts), producing between 1,000 and 3,000 newton-metres (737 and 2,213 pounds-foot) of torque.
