Moyglare Sand & Gravel of Kildare is quickly establishing a pattern that involves acquiring Volvo trucks. The two new Volvo FM 420 8x4 tippers the firm recently added to its 20-vehicle fleet have followed hard upon two others it acquired earlier this year. Furthermore, the supplier of certified stone, sand, and gravel plans to add another two FM 8x4s early next year and possibly a five-axle FM in the future. The family-operated company’s newest tippers will log roughly 80,000 kilometres (49,710 miles) annually while collecting materials from sister company Kildare Sand & Gravel’s quarry and delivering it to customers in Co. Kildare and the Leinster province.
“The drivers are very happy with their new trucks,” says Moyglare Director Christy O’Neill. “The visibility in the latest version of the FM is top drawer. The steering is also very easy and receptive. They handle very well and are great to drive.”
Making Lives Easier
Volvo Trucks dealer Irish Commercials supplied all Moyglare’s recent FMs. The latest two arrived equipped with Hyva tipper bodywork and appointed in Moyglare’s light-blue livery with signwriting from Mayfield Body Repairs. Each truck has a sleeper cab with a 12-inch, fully dynamic, high-resolution digital instrument display and a separate 9-in. side display that makes it easy to access infotainment, navigation, transport data, and camera monitoring functions.
Each tipper is powered by a D13K Euro 6 Step E diesel engine that generates a maximum of 420 horsepower (309 kilowatts) and 2,100 newton-metres (1,549 pounds-foot) of torque. Moyglare opted for a Volvo I-Shift automated gearbox with additional I-Shift construction software to take on the tougher terrain the trucks cross. I-Shift automatically times gear shifts by constantly evaluating speed, weight, road grade, torque demand, and other information.
“The drivers like the I-Shift transmission; it makes their lives a lot easier,” O’Neill says. “We always opt for drum brakes as well, rather than discs, as in our experience, they are more robust and suitable when working off-road in construction sites.”
Reliability Is Everything
O’Neill says that although Moyglare’s fleet includes other manufacturers’ vehicles, it is increasingly transitioning to Volvo vehicles. She says FMs in particular are close to the ideal truck for the firm’s line of work.
“The new trucks haven’t missed a beat for us since we put them into service,” O’Neill says. “That reliability is so important, ensuring our customers will get their deliveries on time, every time.”
The Volvo FM
The Volvo FM is available in tractor and rigid formats and in five other cab choices. Versions running on biodiesel, HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), LNG (liquified natural gas), and electric power are also available, as are D11K Euro 6 diesel engines. Power ratings for D11K and D13K engines range from 330 to 500 horsepower (243 to 368 kilowatts).
