The Actros L has come to represent Mercedes-Benz’s most luxurious and largest long-haul truck in its high-end Actros series. This week at the IAA Transportation 2022 trade fair, Mercedes-Benz announced the arrival of its new Actros L, which is packed with the latest technology and powered by the third-generation OM 471 engine, which reduces fuel consumption by 4%.
“The transition to CO2-neutral road transport is in full swing,” says Stina Fagerman, head of marketing, sales and services at Mercedes-Benz Trucks. “For the transitional phase, we aim to further optimise our premium trucks with conventional diesel engines, not only in the interest of our customers, not only to sustainably reduce the total cost of ownership, but also the CO2 footprint.”
Mercedes-Benz is also showcasing a new, limited-edition Actros L Edition 3, of which only 400 will be made.
What’s New With The OM 471
The third-generation OM 471 engine on the new Actros L introduces a consumption-optimised turbocharger, which is a primer driver of the increased fuel savings. Another technical innovation on the new OM 471 is the Top Torque program designed to only deliver extra performance when it is necessary. The new Actros L’s powertrain improves the PowerShift Advanced automated transmission to deliver faster and smoother gear selection. Mercedes-Benz says the new drivetrain is available for all of its heavy-duty truck series, including the standard Actros and the Arocs.
Upgraded Actros L Cab
Mercedes-Benz offers the Actros L with StreamSpace, BigSpace and GigaSpace cabs that are 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) wide, with a level floor throughout for greater freedom of movement. Mercedes-Benz says the new Actros L features improved sound and heat insulation. Drivers further benefit from Mercedes-Benz's second-generation MirrorCam technology. The new MirrorCam features improved colour and brightness coordination for better precision in dark or poorly lit areas, as well as shorter camera arms that Mercedes-Benz says allow drivers to more easily reverse in a straight line because the perspective is closer to a typical glass mirror.
Safety Features
The Actros L delivers the latest in driver assistance and safety. With Mercedes-Benz second-generation Active Driver Assist (ADA 2) system, for example, the Actros L can help with acceleration, braking, maintaining distance between vehicles, and, in some cases, steering. It also features an Emergency Stop Assist function to initiate braking and a complete truck halt if, after a series of visual and audible warnings, the driver doesn’t appear to be actively controlling the vehicle. ADA 2 is one of many safety technologies on the Actros L and complements features like Mercedes-Benz’ Active Brake Assist (ABA) 5 emergency braking, Active Sideguard Assist (ASGA), and Proximity Control Assist.
The Actros Edition 3
Following the luxurious look and feel of the limited-run Actros Edition 1 and Edition 2, the Actros Edition 3 is designed with a first-class interior and stylish exterior amenities. Inside the cab, the Actros Edition 3 features Nappa leather around the instrument panel and door handles, a carbon fibre look on other interior parts, and ambient lighting on the roof hatch. On the outside, Mercedes-Benz equips stainless-steel entry steps and axle caps, which accent the dark chrome elements on the side and hood. Buyers can specify any two- or three-axle model in the new Actros L generation as an Edition 3 truck.
