Ipswich-based wastewater specialist Binder is no stranger to Mercedes-Benz trucks. The third-generation family business has been running Mercedes-Benz trucks since the mid-1990s. Most of the company’s 17 vacuum tankers, with gross vehicle weights (GVWs) ranging from 18 to 32 tonnes (19.8 to 35.2 U.S. tons), are Mercedes-Benz, but the rest are based on another manufacturer’s chassis. The latest addition, a new 8x2 Arocs 3236L purchased from Motus Truck & Van marks a true return to the brand. The eight-wheeled Arocs is already in use, emptying sewage plants and septic tanks in East Anglia.
About The Arocs 3236L
Binder’s new truck has a ClassicSpace M-cab and is fitted with a 4,000-gallon (15,000-litre) tank from Whale Tankers in Solihull. Whale Tankers is also building Binder a 3,000-gal (11,300-L) body for a 6x2 Mercedes-Benz Actros 2533L that the company will receive later this year. The Arocs is powered by a 10.7-litre in-line six-cylinder Euro 6 engine rated for 360 horsepower (265 kilowatts) and a single drive axle.
The Arocs comes with Predictive Powertrain Control as standard. This feature recognises upcoming driving situations such as hills, junctions, and roundabouts, and reacts automatically to save fuel. The ergonomically designed cab includes large suspension seats with optional heating and multiple options for storage, lighting, and technology.
Better Visibility With MirrorCam
The truck is also Binder’s first to be equipped with MirrorCam technology. The camera system, which replaces traditional mirrors, improves rear visibility with reversing guides displayed on the cab’s A-pillar screens and eliminates forward-facing blind spots caused by conventional mirror housings. The system also saves on fuel due to the reduced drag of the design.
“The images from the cameras are brilliantly clear and allow me to see so much more of the lorry, which is a big help when I’m reversing,” says Binder driver Zach Youngman. “What’s more, I don’t have a big slab of mirror obscuring my view to the front. The fact that the cameras are mounted on the roof is also an advantage when I’m on narrow lanes, as it means they’re less susceptible than mirrors to damage from hedgerows or oncoming vehicles.”
