“A standard tipper with fixed sides is no good for us; we need the ability to operate as a dropside too—but ask a bodybuilder for this, and the options become very limited,” says Allan. “So instead, we set about building precisely what we needed, and we’re absolutely delighted with the result.”
Uniquely Versatile
The multifunction tipper’s floor and sides are made from Hardox 450 steel and Strenx 700 structural steel makes up the crossmembers, balancing strength and weight. The home builder moved away from conventional dropside body designs by incorporating hydraulic single-piece sides that the driver can lower with a switch for loading or unloading. The body features a dual-action tail door with hydraulics to easily lift when discharging muck, as well as a hydraulic vibration unit to help shake out sticky material. Finally, Malcolm Allen had a sliding cover built into the body that drivers can activate electrically. It runs along removable fixed wires on the top side of both shelvings.
“I doubt if there is another one like it in the UK, and that’s probably the way it’ll remain—unless of course we want another for our fleet,” says Allan.
Increased Payload & Functionality
The new Volvo FMX 460 is replacing an 18-t (19.8-U.S.-t) truck, and the bespoke tipper body supports a payload of 18.5 t (20.4 U.S. t). The Volvo FMX 460 8x4 Tridem and its hydraulically steered rear lifting axle can operate on or off road. When the terrain gets rough, Malcolm Allan Housebuilders benefits from special software for the I-Shift automated gearbox that facilitates standing starts and low-speed manoeuvring. Volvo’s Drive package and Media package are on board to enhance the driving experience across all types of terrain.
