Tesco Adds First All-Electric Refrigerated Truck—An 18-Tonne Renault—To UK Fleet

Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, recently started using its first fully electric refrigerated truck (an 18-tonne Renault E-Tech D Wide) to run routes from its Dagenham distribution centre to locations throughout Greater London. (Photo courtesy of Renault.)

Tesco recently debuted its first 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) fully electric refrigerated truck, a Renault Trucks E-Tech D Wide with a refrigeration body from Solomon Commercials. The UK’s largest supermarket chain has put the truck to work delivering goods from its Dagenham distribution centre to more than 400 store locations in Greater London. With zero emissions and low traffic noise, the E-Tech D Wide qualifies for operation in the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and Congestion Charge Zone. Tesco plans to bring on more electric vehicles in the coming months.

    Exciting Transition

“We all want to see improved air quality and less pollution in our towns and cities, and electric vehicles will play a crucial role in achieving this,” says Tesco UK and ROI CEO Jason Tarry. “The Tesco distribution network is one of the largest in the UK and provides us with a great opportunity to roll out new technologies like this industry-leading E-Tech electric truck from Renault Trucks. Together with our switch to electric home delivery vans and rolling out electric vehicle charging points for our customers, we’re really excited about the improvements we’re making across our business and our transition to electric vehicles.”

The E-Tech D Wide’s 600-volt lithium-ion batteries reach full charge overnight with a standard industrial outlet or in less than two hours on a fast charger, and give the truck a range of up to 120 kilometres. (Photo courtesy of Renault.)

    About The E-Tech D Wide

Tesco’s truck features a Carrier TRS Syberia 11 refrigeration unit with power converter. The truck has multiple temperature zones to allow the transport of items with different temperature needs. Power is delivered directly from the vehicle’s batteries through Renault’s 600-volt TVJB Fridge power supply unit. Built on a 4.75-metre (15.6-foot) wheelbase, the E-Tech D Wide is equipped with a Day Cab and has a 6.4-m (21-ft) external length and a rear shutter door with a 1,500-kilogram (3,307-pound) column tail lift. Four 600-V lithium-ion batteries provide a combined 265 kilowatt-hours to power the truck and the permanent-magnet technology delivers peak power of 370 kilowatts (503 horsepower) and up to 425 newton-metres (313 pounds-foot) of torque. The batteries reach full charge overnight with a standard industrial outlet or in less than two hours on a fast charger, and give the E-Tech D Wide a range of up to 120 kilometres (75 miles).
