New Volkswagen Amarok Offers Driver Assist Upgrades, Better Off-Road Capability

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching a second generation of its Amarok pickup truck, which sold over 830,000 units since it was released in 2010. The new-generation Amarok will be available later this year in select markets, and Volkswagen will offer the pickup in four-door DoubleCab and two-door SingleCab versions. The vehicle is equipped with more than 20 new driver assist systems, including adaptive cruise control that monitors road signs and automatically controls the truck’s speed, lane assist, and dynamic light assist. Volkswagen extended the wheelbase by 177 millimetres (7 inches), providing more room for passengers in the DoubleCab and shortening the body overhang; Volkswagen says the longer wheelbase improves the Amarok’s off-road capability by providing better approach angles and the shorter bodywork increases the fording depth from 500 mm (19.7 in.) to 800 mm (31.5 in.).

    Higher-Capacity Cargo Box

The Amarok’s cargo box has enough space between the wheel arches to accommodate a Euro pallet loaded sideways, and models with the SingleCab can transport two pallets. Eye rings are available to secure freight, and Volkswagen increased the payload capacity to 1.16 tonnes (1.28 U.S. tons), up from the first-gen Amarok’s 1-t (1.1-U.S.-t) payload. A powered roll cover is available and can be opened or closed from inside the vehicle, remotely via the key fob, or from the cargo box itself. Volkswagen offers a number of accessories that extend the functionality of the cargo box, such as a bike carrier, a carrier system, and a complete range of styling bars. The Amarok’s static roof load capacity is 350 kilograms (772 pounds), and Volkswagen is offering a four-person roof tent as an accessory for those using the truck for off-road adventures.

    Powertrain Options

Engine and transmission options for the Amarok will vary by market. There are five turbocharged engines, include four diesel and one petrol engine ranging from a 148-horsepower (110-kilowatt) diesel engine for the African market to the 298-HP (222-kW) petrol engine. Volkswagen says that in many markets the Amarok will include 4MOTION all-wheel drive, a feature that allows the truck to tow 3.5 t (3.86 U.S. t).

    Intelligent Driving Profiles

Drivers can activate any of six driving profiles to quickly improve the pickup’s functionality. Terrain-specific options like Slippery, Snow/Sand, and Mud/Rut area available, and with Normal, Eco, and Tow/Haul profiles, drivers can also increase efficiency on the road. A variety of trim levels are available, too, with the higher-level options providing more driver assistance features, such as park assist or a 360-degree camera.
