Ken White Distribution’s fleet has undergone a dramatic change over the last five years. The Andover-based electrical goods distributor once operated only Swedish-built trucks, but now, all but three of its 26 vehicles are from Mercedes-Benz. Ken White Distribution recently continued transforming its fleet with the acquisition of three new Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks, including a 4x2 tractor unit and two 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) rigid box trucks.
“Our Mercedes-Benz trucks have proved impressively reliable, are good on fuel, and look great,” says Co-Director and Transport Manager Ian Reeve.
4x2 Tractor Unit
Each of the 12 tractor units in Ken White Distribution’s fleet are 4x2 models with a 28-tonne (31-U.S.-t) gross combination weight (GCW). The firm configured its new Actros 1842 with a 420-horsepower (310-kilowatt) engine and the flat-floored BigSpace cab. The tractor unit is also fitted with side skirts, and like the 18-t rigids, it features smart finishes like colour-coded bumpers, grilles, and sun visors.
18-Tonne Rigids
The majority of Ken White Distribution’s rigid trucks are 18-t models like the two new Actros 1824 rigid box trucks, excluding a pair of 7.5-t (8.3-U.S.-t) trucks. The new Actros rigids are equipped with 238-HP (175-kW) engines and aerodynamic StreamSpace cabs, and include a full complement of advanced technology from Mercedes-Benz. Just a few of the advanced features include MirrorCam, Active Brake Assist 5, and the newly revised, fuel-saving Predictive Powertrain Control system.
“We employ a number of long-serving drivers and I’ll admit there was a bit of resistance to the introduction of MirrorCam from some of them,” Reeve says. “But they were quickly won over when they started using the system and now, because the visibility is so much better, they all think it’s brilliant.”
