Mon Motors, an automotive dealer group founded in 1971 and based in South Wales and West of England, has added a new Volvo FM 460 Globetrotter 4x2 tractor truck to its fleet and paired it with a seven-car transporter trailer. The truck is moving vehicles from the company’s preparation centre to dealerships throughout the region. Volvo dealership Truck and Bus Wales and West supplied the truck, which will log about 75,000 kilometres (46,602 miles) per year. The new truck’s cab has a three-star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) rating, which will allow it to make deliveries in Greater London after October 2024. The truck replaces an eight-year-old Volvo FH in Mon Motors’ fleet.
“We went for the FM this time to take advantage of the three-star cab, and it’s proven to be perfect for our needs and the distances we cover,” says Mon Motors Managing Director Gavin Cleverly. “This truck is going into and out of urban areas all the time, so safety is our No. 1 priority.”
Making The Rounds
Mon Motors’ new FM will make regular deliveries into Bath and occasionally into central London. The family-owned firm worked closely with Truck and Bus Wales to make certain the FM’s specifications, including its fifth wheel positioning, were optimised for car transport. The truck boasts a Millennium Silver factory paint job and Michelin tyres. At the factory, an under-bunk fridge-freezer was installed, allowing drivers to grab food and drinks from the driver’s seat. The Globetrotter cab features a 12-inch high-resolution instrument display and a 9-in. side display that’s used for infotainment, navigation, monitoring camera feeds, and more.
“With the new FM, our driver benefits from a spacious cab with raised A-pillars, a large windscreen, a low door line, and great mirrors which gives him excellent visibility, plus the wide-angle camera in the nearside mirror arm provides a fantastic view down the passenger side of the vehicle,” says Cleverly.
The Volvo FM
Volvo also makes the FM available in rigid formats, and with five other cab options. The Euro 6 D11 and D13 diesel engines available for the FM have 330- to 500-horsepower (243- to 368-kilowatt) power ratings. Other versions of the FM run on LNG, biodiesel, and electric power. Technologies available include I-See cruise control, which Volvo says can lower fuel consumption by as much as 5%, an I-Shift automated mechanical transmission for easier and safer driving, and Volvo Dynamic Steering, which uses input from multiple sensors to control an electric motor fitted to the steering gear to make steering easier and to correct unintentional steering movements.
