Professional moving service James Removals of Blackheath has purchased outright its first new Volvo, an FM 430 4x2 rigid with a bespoke body. Local dealer MC Truck & Bus supplied the new vehicle, which replaced a like-for-like truck from another manufacturer.
“Volvo’s excellent service and quality trucks were recommended to me by a contact in the industry who has put his trust in their brand for many years,” says James Removals owner James De-Machen.
High Visibility
“We have been looking to add a Volvo to our fleet for several years, so when the older rigid needed updating, it seemed the ideal time,” De-Machen says. “It also tied in with the launch of the latest version of the FM with the updated cab, which was offered at a very reasonable price.”
The FM’s new cab has a three-star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) rating, so it will continue to be able to operate within Greater London from October 2024. “The three-star rated cab really stood out for me,” says De-Machen. “It looks fantastic, plus it helps to ensure the FM is perfect for our operations in London.”
De-Machen specified comfort and convenience features for the new Volvo’s cab, including a leather interior, a 28-litre (7.4-gallon) refrigerator, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, dual bunks, a microwave, a TV, and satellite navigation. He also ordered the FM with the Volvo Active Safety option with adaptive cruise control, emergency brake assistance, driver alertness support, a lane departure-warning system, and lane-keeping support.
Bespoke, Demountable Body
James Removals’ new Volvo FM also features a full air suspension, a rear towing application, and a custom, demountable body. “We had the new demountable bodies designed with a low chassis and lower profile tyres for health and safety reasons; it makes them more suitable for the work our drivers carry out,” says De-Machen. “A drawbar trailer further allows us to increase our payload capacity when necessary.”
James Removals’ new FM is equipped with a Euro 6, Volvo D11K engine with 430 horsepower (316 kilowatts) and 2,050 newton-metres (1,512 pounds-foot) of torque. It has an I-Shift automated gearbox, which nets better fuel economy and high performance.
As part of a fleet of 20 trucks, the new Volvo is expected to log up to 35,000 kilometres (22,000 miles) each year moving furniture throughout London and Kent. The company also performs home and office removals as far away as France, Spain, and Ireland.
The Volvo FM
Volvo offers FM trucks in rigid and tractor formats with up to five axles and six cab options. Its diesel engines have 330- to 500-HP (243- to 368-kW) power ratings and can also burn HVO. The truck is also available in LNG, biodiesel, and electric versions.
The FM sports Volvo’s new V-shaped LED headlights. The Volvo Dynamic Steering option supplements the hydraulic power assist with an electric motor to reduce steering effort at low speeds. Volvo Dynamic Steering also maintains the direction of travel at speed over bumps and ruts, and even resists side winds that attempt to push the truck astray.
