JA Killoh’s head office in Fraserburgh places it near one of Europe’s largest fishing ports, and the firm is responsible for delivering many of the port’s processed seafood products to supermarket distribution centres across the UK. The fleet of 20, many of which are already Mercedes-Benz trucks, recently gained two Actros L 2546 tractors with 10.7-ltre, six-cylinder engines rated for 460 horsepower (340 kilowatts). The trucks were provided by Aberdeen’s BLS Truck & Van.
“BLS Truck & Van’s Chris Dyer is a good salesman; he’s very professional and nothing is too much trouble for him,” says proprietor James Killoh. “Chris told me about the Actros L and I liked the sound of it, so decided to order a couple, which we’ve also spec’d with fridges and microwaves.”
A Quiet, Comfortable Cab
Mercedes-Benz offers the Actros L with StreamSpace, BigSpace and GigaSpace cabs that are 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) wide, with a level floor throughout for greater freedom of movement. JA Killoh selected the BigSpace cab, with 1.9 m (6.2 ft) of headroom and enhanced noise insulation. Drivers further benefit from such premium equipment as stylish seat covers, a comfortable mattress, and compatibility with Mercedes-Benz’s high-end Interior Line accessories.
Safety Features
The Actros L delivers the latest in driver assistance and safety. With Mercedes-Benz second-generation Active Driver Assist (ADA 2) system, for example, the Actros L can help with acceleration, braking, maintaining distance between vehicles, and, in some cases, steering. It also features an Emergency Stop Assist function to initiate braking and a complete truck halt if, after a series of visual and audible warnings, the driver doesn’t appear to be actively controlling the vehicle. ADA 2 is one of many safety technologies on the Actros L and complements features like Mercedes-Benz’ Active Brake Assist (ABA) 5 emergency braking, the MirrorCam system that replaces traditional mirrors with cameras and in-cab displays, and Proximity Control Assist.
Favourable Impressions
“These are still early days but first impressions are certainly positive,” says proprietor James Killoh. “The drivers tell me they’re really quiet and comfortable, while in terms of fuel consumption the new trucks are already performing at the top end of our 9- to 9.5-mpg fleet average. Obviously, I’m very happy with that.”
