Formula One Group has installed its premium-quality uPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) conservatories, doors, and windows in more than 2,500 homes across Shropshire and the West Midlands. Each of the firm’s delivery teams arrives at jobsites in a smartly finished Mercedes-Benz 7.5-tonne (8.3-U.S.-ton) Atego, and with the recent addition of two new Atego rigid box trucks, the firm’s Atego delivery fleet has grown to five.

“It’s imperative to the success of our business that we honour the delivery commitments we make,” says owner and Managing Director Martin Corcoran. “We’ve always relied on the Atego because we know it won’t let us down. Ours average 75,000 miles a year but we still have a 2016-registered truck that’s now covered 1.2 million miles and continues to do a great job, day in, day out.”

    The Right Choice

Formula One’s new trucks are Atego 818 variants with 177-horsepower (130-kilowatt) 5.1-litre four-cylinder engines and smooth-shifting six-speed PowerShift 3 automated manual transmissions. The firm also spec’d its new trucks with ClassicSpace S-cabs, adding ventilated driver’s suspension seats. Fred Smith & Sons equipped both Ategos with roof-mounted air deflectors and box bodies.

“In addition to its fantastic build quality the Atego is very smooth and comfortable, which is crucial given the distances our drivers have to cover,” says Corcoran. “It’s also fuel-efficient, cost-effective to operate and, being a Mercedes-Benz, the safest vehicle in its weight class.”

    Designed For Construction & Distribution

The Atego range includes models with gross vehicle weights of between 7.5 and 16 t (17.6 U.S. t) with four cab options from which to choose. Mercedes-Benz offers an optional parameterisable special module (PSM) to simplify body-mounting; this fully multiplexed electronic system is networked to the Atego’s CAN bus system and communicates with bodywork systems to facilitate simpler connections and functionality. The Atego also offers wide compatibility with light- and medium-duty bodywork designed for all manner of construction and distribution jobs. Engines range from 154 to 295 HP (115 to 220 kW) and transmission options include six-, eight-, or nine-speed gearboxes as well as the aforementioned PowerShift 3 automated alternative.
