JSP Hauliers of Manchester recently took delivery of a new 530-horsepower (390-kilowatt) DAF XG+ 530 FTG 6x2 tractor that uses renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel fuel. The truck is the transportation and trucking company’s first from DAF’s New Generation XF, XG, and XG+ lineup. In the coming months, the family-owned business will add five New Generation XFs to its fleet of 22 vehicles, all of which use HVO fuel. JSP Hauliers has yet to use the XG+ consistently for long-distance transport, but has seen an initial uptick in efficiency and economy over its previous-generation DAF XFs.
“It’s company policy for us to use HVO fuel in all of our trucks,” says Steven Singh, who jointly heads up JSP Hauliers along with his father Jarnial and his brother Danny. “Although it costs us more than diesel, we’re pleased to play a part in reducing our overall emissions. Because of the sustainability benefits, we also find that it’s viewed favourably by current and prospective customers who are keen to minimise their own environmental footprint.”
Fuelled To Succeed
DAF dealer MOTUS Commercials of Manchester supplied the truck, which JSP Hauliers named “Wishesh” in honour of the Singh brothers’ mother. The truck runs on Green Biofuels’ Green D-branded aromatic-free paraffinic diesel, which DAF says delivers up to a 90% or greater reduction in greenhouse gas emissions vs. conventional diesel. DAF designed its New Generation XF, XG, and XG+ trucks to fully align with objectives of new European Union Masses & Dimension regulations that prioritise fuel efficiency, safety, and driver comfort. DAF says the New Generation trucks deliver 10% higher fuel efficiency.
DAF’s New Generation trucks have been named International Truck of the Year 2022, and the XG+ garnered a Best Diesel Tractor Unit award in the 2022 Fleet News Awards. The manufacturer gave all three models a new aerodynamic design, but the flagship XG+ has the most interior space at 12.5 cubic metres (441 cubic feet), with a standing height up to 2,195 millimetres (86.4 inches). DAF also says the XG+ allows for the most generous seat and steering wheel adjustment in the market, and comes with an option for a Park Airco system for automatic cooling and heating. Seat options include a driver’s seat that swivels up to 110 degrees and a foldable co-driver seat with a headrest that converts to a table.
The New Generation XG+
The New Generation XG+ is available with PACCAR MX-11 or MX-13 engines ranging in rated power from 449 to 530 HP (330 to 390 kW). The 530-HP version delivers 2,700 newton metres (1,991 pounds-foot) of torque in top gear. JSP Hauliers’ XG+ includes the DAF Digital Vision System (DDVS), which replaces the primary and wide-angle mirrors with high-mounted retractable cameras, and includes ergonomically positioned left and right monitors in the cab with auto panning, extra-wide-angle viewing, and defrosting capabilities.
“From a driver’s perspective, the DAF Digital Vision System we opted for is without doubt one of the very best on the market,” Singh says. “I’ve used a similar camera system before, and DAF’s is much better. It’s been well-designed, and stays clear in bad weather, which is crucial.
