Arla, a leader in the Swedish dairy industry and one of the largest dairy companies in the world with operations in seven countries, recently added a Scania battery-electric vehicle to its fleet of delivery trucks to support its efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations. The company’s heavy transports have been fossil-free in Sweden since 2018 as Arla has moved to electric vehicles and alternative fuels such as biogas and biodiesel.
Going Green
The electric distribution truck makes daily deliveries of Arla products from the Stockholm dairy to stores within the city. The three-axle 300-kilowatt-hour truck has a range of up to 150 kilometres (93 miles) on a single charge, and its zero emissions and quiet operation make it an ideal option for work in densely populated areas.
Arla made its first electric delivery from the Kallhäll dairy to an ICA Kvantum supermarket in Kungsholmen, where representatives from Scania, Arla, ICA, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency hailed the arrival of the truck and its passenger, Stockholm City finance councillor Anna König Jerlmyr.
“The electrification of deliveries means a fantastic improvement in both noise level and air quality,” says Councillor König Jerlmyr. “It is also crucial for the transition to a greener society.”
Scania Electric Trucks
The fully electric Scania truck can cover short- and medium-range routes and the 60-kilowatt power take-off (PTO) provides continuous emission-free hydraulics and refrigeration unit operations. Currently available options include 300 and 165 kWh of power from lithium-ion batteries and peak propulsion of 295 kilowatts and 2,200 newton-metres (1,622 pounds-foot) of torque or 230 kW and 1,300 N-m (958 lbf-ft) continuous.
“Scania is investing heavily in electrification,” says Fredrik Lundström, Fleet Sales Manager at Scania Sweden. “We’re building battery factories and developing test facilities. Within a year or so we will also offer electric trucks for heavier regional transports, as we continue to expand the transport options for electrification.”
