Volvo dealership Thomas Hardie Commercials has supplied Harrisons Transport of Preston, Lancashire, with five new Volvo FH 460 6x2 tractor units. Each truck includes Volvo’s I-Save technology, which reduces fuel usage in long-haul operations by combining a Volvo D13TC Turbo Compound engine with Volvo’s Fuel Package. The package includes Volvo’s I-See predictive cruise control, I-Shift, I-Cruise with I-Roll, and other technologies and components. Volvo says I-Save can reduce fuel costs by up to 10% and lets operators drive at lower revs and in a higher gear for a longer period.
“The fuel returns we’ve seen from these Volvo turbo compound engines are very good,” says Lee Harrison, owner of Harrisons Transport. “We originally took on eight back in 2019, and they’ve averaged around 11 mpg, which we are very happy with.”
Welcome To The Fleet
Harrisons Transport provides temperature-controlled transport, container haulage, and ambient/traction delivery services throughout the UK and Europe. Three of its new trucks will be on container duties and will log about 130,000 kilometers (80,800 miles) per annum, while the other two will cover around 200,000 km (124,300 mi) per year hauling temperature-controlled products in reefer trailers.
Harrisons specified all five trucks with the Volvo Drive++ package and a Globetrotter XL cab with Twin Bed Living package, which boasts a luxury heated driver’s seat, a reclining lower bunk, an audio and media package, and a 33-litre (8.7-gallon) under-bunk refrigerator-freezer. Each truck also bears the transport specialist’s blue livery, and comes with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels.
Volvo also makes the FH available as a rigid, offers five cab options, and lets buyers choose from among several engine options ranging from 420 to 540 horsepower (313 to 402 kilowatts) and including options for diesel, biodiesel, liquified natural gas (LNG), and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel.
Turbo Compound Benefits
Harrisons’ new Volvo FHs are each powered by a 460-HP (343-kW) Euro 6 D13TC Step D engine with Turbo Compound technology. The TC engine, also available in a 500-HP (373-kW) variant, is Volvo’s most fuel-efficient ever, the manufacturer says. The engine can produce 300 newton-metres (221 pounds-foot) more torque at low revs, meaning less acceleration—and less fuel—are required to maintain a constant speed in highway traffic. Working with I-See, the engine can take on hills and gradients in a higher gear and maintain speed whilst saving fuel. When I-Cruise is on, I-See assumes gear selection, acceleration, and engine braking duties.
