FPT Industrial and its subsidiary Potenza Technology recently announced they are the battery pack providers for the electric OX truck, a vehicle designed expressly for emerging markets. The affordable vehicle is shipped in flat packs with the components and sub-assemblies tightly arranged within the frame. Once assembled, the OX truck provides the balance and ground clearance to cover rough terrain without the need for a heavy, expensive four-wheel-drive system. The two under-floor battery packs power a fully-laden OX truck for 200 kilometres (124 miles), and the system can be easily recharged using solar panels for ultra-low energy costs.
The OX Truck
The OX truck, which will soon be in its fifth iteration, was recently featured at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, aka COP26. It boasts a cargo payload of 1,800 kilograms (3,968 pounds) with a volume of 8.8 cubic metres (311 cubic feet). To effectively operate on rough terrain, the OX truck has a 1.3-metre (4.26-foot) fording depth and a high, 50-degree approach angle, as well as a 144-degree breakover angle. Because it is recharged using solar panels, the OX truck delivers zero tailpipe emissions and reduces pollution and carbon emissions at all stages.
Ideal For Emerging Markets
Trucks typically available in emerging markets don’t always match up well with the challenging terrain and capacity needs for emerging markets. According to OX, its electric truck provides three times the capacity of a typical pickup used in emerging markets, as well as twice the payload. OX says its trucks are three times more efficient for transportation than fully assembled vehicles; six flat-pack OX trucks can fit into a 12.2-m (40-ft)-high cube container. The OX truck also combines with a pay-as-you-go app to help the truck owner’s customers deliver their goods to market.
