IVECO reports that Imperial Logistics recently added 18 new IVECO Stralis Natural Power trucks to its fleet. Powered by Liquified Natural Gas (Bio-LNG), the new trucks support Imperial’s goals for more sustainable operations whilst working from a satellite transport office on the Unipart campus at MINI Plant Oxford in Cowley, Oxfordshire. IVECO NP heavy trucks are the only factory-built 6x2 tractors to run solely on natural gas.
A Dramatic Reduction Of Carbon Emissions
The 18 AS440S46TX/P LNG IVECO Stralis NP 460 tractors run 24 hours a day with multiple shift drivers and are expected to collectively cover around 3.3 million kilometres (2.05 million miles) per year. Imperial estimates the new trucks will reduce its annual carbon emissions by over 3,000 tonnes (3,300 U.S. tons). Before the trucks hit the road, all drivers and site staff that would be fuelling vehicles received training from Roadgas personnel on how to safely operate the gas refuelling equipment.
"At Imperial we don't just focus on our profitability; our people and the environment are a very important consideration,” says Imperial UK Managing Director Mark Miles. “We consider it our duty as a responsible and caring member of the global business community to adopt environmental best practice whenever possible in the course of our daily activity; and so the opportunity to reduce our UK haulage operation's environmental impact was compelling. We're delighted to be working with our customers as part of a joint effort to improve sustainability in logistics, reconciling business efficiency with environmental protection."
About The Stralis NP 460
The Stralis NP 460 is equipped with IVECO’s 12.9-litre CURSOR 13 engine which offers a diesel-equivalent 460 horsepower (343 kilowatts) and 2,000 newton-metres (1,475 pounds-foot) of torque across a wide power band. The trucks are also equipped with a 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated gearbox with predictive mapping; they run quietly, at just 71dB, for a substantial reduction in noise pollution in addition to the lower carbon emissions. The new vehicles have truck-specific navigation and GPS tracking as well as IVECO’s in-house connectivity system which monitors fuel economy data and driver performance. Finally, the natural gas trucks benefit from longer service intervals and can go up to 90,000 km (56,000 mi) between oil changes.
"It's great to see that IVECO Natural Power trucks are having a powerful impact beyond their own road-haulage work,” says IVECO UK Heavy Business-line Director, Gareth Lumsdaine. “Not only are our products allowing transport operators to significantly reduce their own environmental impact but are allowing partnerships with pioneering businesses to make a meaningful green change back down the line."
