The Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4x4 truck has been around for 75 years and continues to offer exceptional versatility. Aberdeenshire contractor and farmer Brian Greig just purchased a new Unimog to replace his farm tractor for many jobs around the area.
“The Unimog impressed from the outset,” says Greig. “Not only was it quicker, but on the first day it used 45 fewer litres of fuel than our tractor on exactly the same job.”
From Trial Unit To New Unimog
Simon Holes, a Unimog sales specialist with Lloyd Ltd arranged a week-long trial of a Unimog U430 with an implement carrier for Greig. After being impressed by the demo unit, Greig settled on a new, more powerful U530 Unimog with a 13.5-tonne (14.9-U.S.-ton) gross vehicle weight and a 7.7-litre, six-cylinder engine that delivers 220 kilowatts (299 horsepower). With a 56 mph (90 km/h) cruising speed on the road, Greig’s new Unimog can handle all of the work he does throughout Aberdeenshire.
“The Unimog is a fantastic all-rounder, and makes us a lot more efficient,” Greig says. “It will do pretty well everything a tractor can, and so much more as well. I have plenty of jobs lined up for it.” Upon delivery, the Unimog was put to work bringing in the harvest, as well as for mowing with a front-mounted mower. “I envisage that it will be working in one role or another year-round,” says Greig. “We’ll even use it with a plough blade on the front to clear snow.”
Unimog Versatility
Mercedes-Benz offers two primary Unimog configurations: a UGE implement carrier and a UHE off-road truck available in a variety of body types. The U530 Greig selected is fitted with the largest permissible agricultural tyres (Michelin 495/70 R24), a three-way tipping body, and a front-mounted linkage. The latter allows Greig to equip a fence post driver for his fencing contractor jobs, or a forklift attachment when working on the farm. To increase versatility, Greig added an agricultural pickup hitch to let the Unimog tow two- and three-axle trailers weighing up to 18 t (19.9 U.S. t).
