Award-winning Gloucestershire craft bakers The Authentic Bread Company saw increased demand from its biggest wholesale customers during the pandemic when lockdowns created a boom in their home delivery businesses. To help move that increased supply of bread, The Authentic Bread Company commissioned its first 7.5-tonne truck, a FUSO Canter 7C15 from Rygor Commercials, and relocated the business to a new location with three times the space as its previous home. The family-owned firm began its journey in 1995 when former BT engineer Alan Davis decided to turn his baking hobby into a career and wound up creating one of the country’s first organic bakeries.
Home Delivery On The Rise
“We’d been expanding steadily and having long since outgrown our previous base had already resolved to move to new, bigger premises,” says Operations Manager Alex Davis. “However, the COVID pandemic prompted a further spike in demand. At one point last year, our sales were 400% up on the corresponding period 12 months earlier. The good news is that our major customers appear to have retained much of the new home delivery business they took on during lockdowns—once people have tasted our delicious, wholesome products, they invariably come back for more.”
About The Canter 7C15
The Authentic Bread Company’s Canter 7C15 is powered by a 3-litre common-rail turbodiesel engine with an output of 110 kilowatts (150 horsepower) and 370 newton-metres (273 pounds-foot) of torque. It has a curtainside body, a five-speed manual gearbox, and a combined body and payload allowance of 5,100 kilograms (11,243 pounds). The truck is contracted to cover a quarter of a million kilometres (155,000 miles) over a three-year period while running routes from the bakery to the company’s customers in Andover and Devon. The relatively compact build of the Canter helps its driver manage the tight access at some of its stops.
