Vehicle collection and disposal specialist Autogreen has purchased a low-roofed Mercedes-Benz Actros 2540L to transport end-of-life vehicles to their ELV Directive-compliant ends. The Daventry, Northamptonshire, firm acquired the 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton), 394-horsepower (290-kilowatt) car hauler from local Mercedes dealer Intercounty Truck & Van. Belle Car Transporters & Specialised Trailers of Great Dunmow, Essex, designed and mounted the truck’s eight-car transporter body, while Wrap Cube of Surbiton, Surrey, applied its graphics.
“The latest Actros stands out from the crowd thanks to its array of new technology,” says Autogreen Director Paul Hillier. “Safety and environmental compatibility were important factors in our decision to acquire this new Mercedes-Benz, and we’re particularly pleased that its four-star Direct Vision Standard rating means the truck will be allowed access to London for the next 10 years. Our collection volumes continue to increase, so it was important that the Actros be equipped to cater for all types of end-of-life vehicle.”
A New Generation
Autogreen has plenty of Mercedes-Benz models in its fleet of more than 200 trucks and vans, but the new 2540L is the first fifth-generation Actros the company has purchased. The vehicle has a 10.7-litre, inline six-cylinder engine.
The Actros’ CompactSpace L-cab has a low ceiling, a low floor, and a 320-millimetre (12.6-inch) engine tunnel. It has been uprated with a 9.0-t (9.9-U.S.-t) front axle in place of the standard 8.0-t (8.8-U.S.-t) unit.
Technology Packages
The MirrorCam system, which comes standard on the new Actros, replaces the side mirrors with cameras outside and display screens inside. This not only eliminates the blind spots behind traditional side mirrors and A-pillars, but also improves fuel efficiency up to 1.5% by making the vehicle more aerodynamic.
Another standard feature, the automated Active Brake Assist 5 system, uses a combination of radar and a camera for enhanced recognition of pedestrians. It can fully brake the vehicle from speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph) in order to avoid hitting people in its path.
Autogreen’s Actros also includes the Safety, Sight, Extra Line, and Style Line packages. Among their features are Mercedes’ Proximity Control Assist, a driver-side airbag, and a rain sensor. The packages’ lighting options include bi-xenon headlamps, automatic main and dipped beams, a headlamp cleaning system, and cornering lights.
The Safety Package also comes with the interactive edition of the truck’s dual-screen Multimedia Cockpit. The upgraded Multimedia Cockpit features satellite navigation and a larger 12-inch instrument panel.
“Early feedback from our drivers has been entirely positive, especially with regards to the new, in-cab technology, which they’ve embraced very quickly,” Hillier says.
