World-renowned single-malt Scotch whisky maker Glenfiddich, part of the 133-year-old family-owned distiller William Grant & Sons, recently entered a partnership with IVECO to decarbonise its transport operations. The “Fuelled by Glenfiddich” initiative will use natural gas-powered Stralis trucks fuelled by waste products from the distillery. The circular-economy transport the companies are creating by using biomethane produced from distilling operations is a first for the drinks industry.
About The Fuel
Waste matter from the distillery will be loaded into an anaerobic digester to enable the company to capture the biogas given off as the material breaks down. The gas is then cleaned and used as a low-carbon, low-particulate fuel for the delivery trucks. The leftover solids are used to fertilise the barley fields of Glenfiddich’s growing partners, enriching the soils through carbon sequestration, pulling carbon dioxide away from the earth’s atmosphere.
About The Stralis NP 460
To support its sustainable transport, Glenfiddich acquired three 4x2 AS440S46T/P CNG Compressed Natural Gas-powered IVECO Stralis NP 460s, which were converted to 6x2 tractors capable of 44-tonne (48.5-U.S.-ton) Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). The Stralis is powered by a 12.9-litre CURSOR 13 engine that produces 460 horsepower (343 kilowatts) and 2,000 newton-metres (1,475 pounds-foot) of torque. The trucks have low fuel consumption and long servicing intervals that won Sustainable Truck of the Year 2019 and Commercial Fleet's Low Carbon Truck of the Year 2017.
The vehicles are also equipped with 12-speed Hi-Tronix automated gearbox and IVECO Hi-Cruise, a predictive gear-shifting and cruise control system that will help them navigate the often-rigorous topography of Scotland. The Stralis also has no need of aftertreatment or diesel particulate filters, an added benefit which allows the natural gas-powered heavy trucks to go 90,000 kilometres between servicing.
A Closed-Loop System
"It has taken more than a decade for Glenfiddich to become the first distillery to process 100% of its waste residues on its own site, then to be the first to process those residues into biogas fuels to power its trucks, and finally to be the first to install a biogas truck fuelling station supplied by our on-site renewable energy facility,” says William Grant & Sons' Dufftown Site Leader, Kirsty Dagnan. "We are proud to have achieved these renewable energy breakthroughs in our industry, and to be working with a pioneering partner such as IVECO as we scale up the decarbonising benefits of this closed-loop process across our entire transport fleet."
