Econ Engineering estimates that it serves 88% of the UK’s local authorities with its trucks for winter maintenance and road repair. And while more than half of the firm’s fleet consists of Mercedes-Benz Actros, Arocs, and Atego models, the recently delivered 4x2 Arocs chassis is the first to feature MirrorCam technology.
MirrorCam Benefits
“In addition to the improved visibility, which promises to be a big help, MirrorCam should be much less susceptible to the typical problems of dirt, rain, and icing up that can be a real issue for those undertaking gritting operations,” explains Econ Managing Director Jonathan Lupton, who believes the roof-mounted, rear-facing cameras will be a boost to gritter drivers working on dark nights and in blizzard conditions. “We have high hopes for MirrorCam’s effectiveness and suitability for winter maintenance applications,” he adds.
Econ’s team also likes compact design of the cameras, which they expect to be less vulnerable to accidental damage from trees and hedges than external mirrors.
A Fleet Favorite
The Mercedes-Benz Arocs is a popular truck at Econ Engineering. There are currently 46 Arocs in build at the company’s production facility, with another 40 on the way later this year.
“With gross weights from 18 to 32 tonnes and 4x2, 4x4, 6x4, 6x6 and 8x4 configurations available, or even 8x6 or 8x8 options for extreme applications, the Arocs range offers everything we need in a medium-to-heavy truck,” Lupton says.
Econ’s range of gritting bodies include capacities from 0.7 to 12 cubic metres (.9 to 15.7 cubic yards) and delivers dry, pre-wet, and liquid treatments. “The chassis is very versatile and an excellent base for our bodies, with front frame adaptations for ploughs and live-drive PTOs to power the hydraulics for salt beds and spinners,” says Lupton.
