Allen Logistics, the three-time winner of the Haulier of the Year trophy at the Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards, has steadily shifted its mixed-marque fleet to an increasingly Mercedes-Benz-dominated one. The recent acquisition of two new Actros 2548 tractor units and a pre-owned 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) Actros tips the fleet to roughly two-thirds in favor of three-pointed stars. The new Actros are the first in the fleet to be equipped with MirrorCam technology and are working between Allen’s headquarters in Craigavon, Co. Armagh, and a depot in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. The pre-owned Actros is currently working palletised distribution.
About The Actros 2548
In addition to MirrorCam, the new 26-t (28.6-U.S.-t) Actros have flat-floored 2.5-metre (8.2-foot) StreamSpace cabs and 12.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engines rated for 350 kilowatts (476 horsepower). The upgraded Multimedia Cockpit replaces the traditional switchgear with twin screens with a larger 12-inch instrument panel and satellite navigation.
The 18-t Actros 1824 from the Mercedes-Benz Approved Used line has a ClassicSpace L-cab with a 175 kW (238 HP), 7.7-L straight-six engine, curtainside bodywork, and a tuckaway tail lift.
“We favour Mercedes-Benz trucks for their ‘bulletproof’ reliability and attractive whole-life costs of operation,” says Allen Logistics Managing Director James Allen. “The new units are performing well in terms of fuel efficiency and the drivers are very happy with them. They like their comfortable cabs and the smart new dash layout. They also needed very little time to get used to the MirrorCam system, which we were keen to introduce to the fleet because of the safety benefits it offers. Not only does this impressive technology provide improved rear vision, but it also eliminates the forward-facing blind spots caused by mirrors.”
