Daimler’s latest FUSO Canter light-duty truck comes with a redesigned cab and new safety and comfort features. The Canter’s standard equipment list includes an exhaust brake and a closed, maintenance-free diesel particulate filter (DPF) on its engine. Options for the truck include a narrower cab for the smaller models as well as the new Sideguard Assist technology, which uses radar sensors to detect unseen bikes and other vehicles on the passenger side of the truck.
The leading edge of the new Canter sports the iconic Black Belt of the Japanese FUSO brand. FUSO trucks are distributed in the UK by Mercedes-Benz Trucks dealers. More than 4.5 million FUSO Canters have been built since the truck’s debut in 1963. Production of the new model will begin in December 2021 at FUSO’s factory in Tramagal, Portugal.
Chassis & Body Options
The new Canter is available in 3.5-, 6.5-, 7.5-, and 8.55-tonne (3.9-, 7.2-, 8.3-, and 9.4-U.S.-ton) weight classes with single, crew, and double cabs. This latest edition of the Canter boasts the small turning radius for which the model is known. The 6.5-t version is available as a selectable four-wheel drive with equal power distribution between the front and rear axles and a self-locking rear axle differential as standard.
The Canter now comes in eight wheelbase lengths spanning 2,500 to 4,750 millimetres (98.4 to 187 inches). The 3S model makes its UK debut with a new 3,400-mm (134-in.) wheelbase. Payload capacities of the new Canter range vary from 1.5 to 6 t (1.65 to 6.6 U.S. t).
A ladder frame with a common bolt hole pattern allows bodybuilders to fit a broad selection of truck bodies to the Canter. Scattolini tipper and dropside bodies are also available as factory option from FUSO.
Powertrain Details
The Canter’s 3.0-litre engine is fitted with a new, compact exhaust system. In addition to the aforementioned DPF, the motor uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to help it meet the EU Stage VI–Step E emission standard. The diesel has a variable-geometry turbocharger and comes in power output levels of 130 to 175 horsepower (97 to 130 kilowatts). A hybrid diesel/electric drive is available in models such as the 7.5-t Canter 7C15 Eco Hybrid.
FUSO offers the Canter with Duonic fully automated or manual transmissions. An available crawl function allows for fine manoeuvring, while a Hill Start Assist feature eases startups on sloping surfaces.
Cab Configurations
The 3.5-t FUSO Canter is available with a narrower, 1.7-metre (5.6-foot)-wide standard cab—a first for the British market—or the more familiar 2-m (6.6-ft)-wide comfort cabin as an option. Six- and seven-passenger cab variants will continue to be offered in several weight classes. A three-person, rear tilting cab provides for quick maintenance access.
Drivers will notice the ergonomic comfort of the Canter’s Isringhausen seats, as well as the automatic climate control and the low operating noise level thanks to improved cabin insulation. The cab is delivery driver-friendly with a low entry height and easy cross-cab and through-cab access facilitated by the dash-mounted gear shift.
Safety Developments
The new Canter’s Sideguard Assist option builds upon the previous model’s Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) technology. The new edition of the truck has a new Autolight function, while optional LED headlights provide up to 30% better visibility.
FUSO also improved the new Canter’s impact protection with stronger cab construction and reinforced doors as part of its RISE (Realised Impact Safety Evolution) concept. The manufacturer also upgraded the truck’s rear underrun protection system.
