Waste Management Specialist Receives Two High-Spec Mercedes-Benz Trucks

Posted On: Friday 30 July 2021

After investing more than £3 million in a new Materials Recovery Facility, Select Environmental Services continues to expand its recycling collection capabilities with a new 8x2 3240 Arocs front-end loader and a 6x2 2530 Actros with a compaction body. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

Select Environmental Services new Mercedes-Benz trucks, an 8x2 3240 ENA Arocs front-end loader and a 6x2 Actros 2530 with a compaction body, provide advanced capabilities and the latest technology for the waste management specialist. For example, both trucks offer container weighing and RFID technology to capture individual bin weights and transfer the data to the truck’s onboard order management system in real time. The 32-tonne (35.2-U.S.-ton) Arocs is also the first Select Environmental Services truck to feature a Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam system.

A Dealer With Expertise In Waste Management

“Putting together a refuse compaction vehicle is a great deal more complex than your average 18-t box truck or curtainsider,” says Select Environmental Services Managing Director, Philip Stone. “There’s the chassis supplier, the bodybuilder, occasionally a third-party bin lifter, and then all the container weighing and RFID technology to contend with. Every component has to work simultaneously from day one.”

For these reasons, the firm went with its trusted vehicle dealer, City West Commercials. “In the past we’ve had issues with another manufacturer whose chassis hadn’t been specified properly and had to be reordered, delaying delivery by over nine months,” explains Stone. “That’s never happened with a vehicle purchased from City West Commercials. They’ve always gone that extra mile to tick every box; hence we continue to source our new trucks from them.”

City West Commercials has also supplied the firm with four 18-tonne Arocs skip-loaders and a pair of 26-t (28.6-U.S.-t) Antos refuse compaction vehicles over the last five years.

    Robust Builds

On the eight-wheel Arocs, Select Environmental Services receives a truck with a 10.7-litre, six-cylinder engine producing 290 kilowatts (394 horsepower) and the front-loading Euro Half Pack bodywork can pick up containers weighing 3,630 kilograms (8,003 pounds). The front-end load extends Select’s recycling capabilities, and the truck also features a five-way Brigade camera system to view the container-emptying process.

The 8x2 Arocs features a ClassicSpace M-cab and Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam technology, both factors that contribute to the truck’s three-star London Direct Vision rating. (Photo courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.)

The six-wheel Actros features a Geesinknorba lithium-powered N4 LLP refuse body, which includes a trade lift to empty 240- to 1,100-L Euro bins. Select configured the Actros 2430 with a ClassicSpace S-Cab and the truck features a 220 kW (300 HP), 7.7-L engine.
