PRM Green Technologies of Cannock, Staffordshire, collects redundant IT equipment for recycling and secure destruction. The firm has acquired a Mercedes-Benz Actros 2540 LnR, a member of the fifth-generation Actros range introduced to the UK in 2019. The purchase mirrors another it made from Midlands Truck & Van three years ago, when the firm acquired the same Actros model equipped with a 26-tonne (28.7-U.S.-ton) chassis with a low frame height ideal for maximising load volumes.
“Our first Mercedes-Benz is still a very nice drive, but this new model is something else altogether,” says PRM Green Technologies Fleet Manager and driver Alex Melbourne. “It feels more like a luxury S-Class car than a truck, and I really look forward to taking it out.”
A Low-Height Chassis
PRM Green Technologies has disposed of equipment from more than 8,000 schools, colleges, and universities throughout the UK. Its fleet includes vans and trucks that deliver equipment to its Cannock headquarters from its various out bases. A third-party carrier previously handled transport of consignments from the out bases to Cannock, but PRM assumed those duties after determining that hauling the consignment loads itself with the Actros made better financial sense. Increased customer demand for its services led PRM to acquire the second Actros.
The new Actros measures 4.2 metres (13.8 feet) high, but its low frame provides a loading aperture less than 2.75 m (9 ft) high, allowing PRM Green Technologies to haul 60 Euro containers, each 800 millimetres (31.5 inches) high. Melbourne says Midlands Truck & Van also provided attractive financing. “We thought Mercedes-Benz would be the most expensive, but because the residual value on the vehicle was so high, the opposite was true,” he says.
Greater Visibility
PRM Green Technologies’ new Actros features a ClassicSpace L-cab, a single-tyred trailing axle, and a 10.7-litre in-line six-cylinder engine rated for 394 horsepower (290 kilowatts). As with PRM’s first Actros, West Bromwich-based Fred Smith & Sons provided the curtainside body for the new Actros.
The firm’s new Actros replaces conventional mirrors with Mercedes-Benz MirrorCam camera-based system that provides enhanced visibility and helps eliminate blind spots. “I quickly got the hang of MirrorCam, and once you’ve done so, it’s fantastic,” says Melbourne. “I can see pretty much everything as I’m approaching an island now because there’s no mirror blocking my view.”
