Just as the medium-duty Eurocargo plays a major role in the success of IVECO’s commercial van and truck lineup, IVECO’s production plant in Brescia, Italy, has played an instrumental role in the Eurocargo’s long-running success since the very beginning. IVECO recently announced that with the recent production of a compressed natural gas (CNG) model, the Italian facility has now manufactured 600,000 Eurocargos.
“Remarkable Sales Success”
The Brescia plant employs 1,600 employees who handle all aspects of Eurocargo production, from chassis assembly to final inspection. The factory also produces special Eurocargos for military and firefighting use. In 2007, a “World Class Manufacturing” production system was introduced at the facility that aimed to achieve zero defects, inefficiencies, waste, and accidents. Plant Director Marco Colonna says the fact that the 600,000th Eurocargo was a CNG model reaffirms IVECO’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
“Launched in 1991, the Bertone-designed Eurocargo was conceived to be one of the most innovative industrial vehicles on the market—as reflected in its remarkable sales success—with a modular cab platform allowing extensive scope for vehicle customisation without driving up costs,” Colonna says. “The significant history that lies behind us now guides us on a path of continuous improvement and innovation which, over the coming years, will see our vehicles evolve to become greener than ever.”
The Eurocargo’s Origins
The Brescia plant dates to 1903 when Roberto Züst founded Fabbrica Automobili, a company that eventually became Officine Meccaniche (OM), itself a founding partner in IVECO in 1975. Prior to producing Eurocargos, the facility manufactured consumer automobiles, race cars, and agriculture equipment. Since 1991, all Eurocargo generations have been produced there.
The Eurocargo underwent a major update in 2015 in which cab width was reduced to the current 2.1 metres (6.9 feet). IVECO also enhanced the large steering angle to 52 degrees and introduced other improvements to enable greater efficiency, manoeuvrability, and sustainability. IVECO says Eurocargos now consume 8% less fuel on urban deliveries than previous generations. In addition to a 204-horsepower (152-kilowatt) CNG power supply, other Eurocargo power options include 4.5-litre Tector 5 and 6.7-L Tector 7 diesel engines ranging from 160 to 320 HP (119 to 239 kW) power levels.
