A.J. Ostridge Transport, a haulage contractor based in Maldon, Essex, recently added a new Volvo FE rigid truck to its 20-vehicle fleet, which also includes a relatively new 6x2 Volvo FM rigid. The newest addition is an 18-tonne (19.8-U.S.-ton) 4x2 with a D8K engine that produces 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) and 950 newton-metres (701 pounds-foot) of torque. The truck also has a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission. The FE will be tasked with delivering flour from Carr’s Flour Mills to supermarkets around London, and A.J. Ostridge Transport expects it to cover as many as 100,000 kilometres (62,000 miles) each year.
Ideal For Urban Operation
The Volvo FE is well-suited for urban distribution thanks to its comfortable cab, superb visibility, and extensive standard safety features. A.J. Ostridge opted for several interior upgrades, including a heated, adjustable driver’s seat with extra lumbar support and an integrated seatbelt.
To ensure the driver can always keep his eyes on the road and an eye out for pedestrians and other vehicles, the FE also features heated, electrically controlled mirrors and a low auxiliary window in the passenger-side door. Another standout safety-related feature is the truck’s forward collision warning, which warns the operator of a potential impact and provides emergency braking to prevent an accident.
“We Only Run Volvos”
“We only run Volvos because experience has shown us they are incredibly reliable and the best vehicles on the market,” says Alan Ostridge, director of A.J. Ostridge Transport. “The FE is perfect for our city operations; the chassis is light and strong, it offers a competitive payload and driver feedback is always really positive. There is simply no reason for us to change. We have enjoyed a long and positive relationship with Volvo. We get a great level of service from our local dealer, and they are always on hand when we need them.”
