Buchanan Skip Hire, a waste management company based in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland, recently added a new Volvo FMX 8x4 rigid truck to its mixed fleet of 21 trucks, making it the fifth Volvo truck in a row purchased by the company. “Our last five vehicle purchases have all been Volvo trucks sourced from a mixture of stock trucks and specific orders,” says John Cunningham, transport manager at Buchanan Skip Hire. “We also run two Volvo FE rigids at 14-tonnes gross vehicle weight and a further two FE at 18-tonnes. This suits our business, which uses a variety of different trucks with maximum operating weights ranging from 3.5 to 32 tonnes.”
The new FMX features Tandem Axle Lift and a Hyva multi-lift hook lift body on an Extra-High, 5,100-millimetre chassis. It also has a Volvo D13K Euro-6 420-horsepower engine and an I-Shift 12-speed automated transmission. Buchanan opted for a day cab configuration with Driving and Living packages for increased operator comfort. The FMX series as a whole offers several model options, including 4x2 to 10x6 axle configurations and engines rated at up to 540 horsepower, to serve a wide range of applications.
Selling Points
One feature that attracted Buchanan Skip Hire to the FMX is the Tandem Axle Lift, which automatically engages the drive axle when carrying heavy loads and allows the driver to disengage it with the push of a button when returning empty. Volvo says that it “only takes about 15 seconds from start to finish, so no valuable time is wasted.” Another selling point was a four-year Volvo Service Contract. All of the company’s Volvo trucks are covered by these packages, which allow for off-hours maintenance and repair for improved uptime.
