Jones Skips of Wolverhampton recently added two Volvo FL-250 rigid trucks and one Volvo FH-500 6x4 tractor unit to its fleet. The company previously owned three other Volvo tractor units, one of which was a 6x4 model that operated for 10 years but will now be replaced by the new FH-500. The new FH features a D13K engine that produces 500 horsepower and several optional upgrades, including a Globetrotter Cab, alloy wheels, heavy-duty bumper, stainless steel exhaust stack, and more.
“I've gone for a huge specification because it's the new flagship of the fleet,” says Lyndon Rushby, director of Jones Skips. “It's a fantastic vehicle; nice and high for landfills, in addition to its excellent power and torque ratios. There's nothing bad I can say about it!”
Skip Trucks
Jones Skips will use its two new Volvo FL 4x2, 18-tonne rigids as skip trucks. They are both powered by 250-horsepower D8K engines and have steel suspensions. Other features include Hill Hold, Traction Control, and vertical exhaust outlets. The company is pleased with their performance so far. “They're a better drive than my other skip lorries and, so far, we've had no problems,” Lyndon adds. “They're doing just what I thought they would do.”
Ongoing Support
Hartshorne Motor Services, a Volvo dealer based in Walsall in the West Midlands, will provide parts and technical support when needed while Jones Skips will perform its own maintenance on all of the vehicles. “Everyone in Hartshorne’s parts department needs recognition,” says Lyndon. “They keep me up to speed if I'm waiting for components and the service department is also fantastic. If I do have a problem, such as a light on the dashboard, they run it in straight away and if it can be fixed there and then they'll do it. That's ultimately why I stayed with Hartshorne. They really are good.”
