J. O’Doherty Haulage Ltd., which is based out of Edmonton, London, recently added ten Volvo FMX 420 8x4 tipper trucks to its fleet, bringing it up to 60 total. The company went with the FMX with a Euro 6 engine to meet emissions standards that go into effect in 2019. The trucks come with 420-horsepower engines as well as I-Shift automated transmissions, and they will take the place of the company’s current Euro-5 models.
"We do construction, demolition, and muckaway work and that's what these new vehicles will be used for,” said owner, Jim O’Doherty, in a news release. “They'll be off-road quite a bit and so it will be interesting to see how the I-Shift gearbox performs. We've got 60 drivers and they like them. The drivers of some of the other makes wanted to go in the new Volvos, so that must tell you something. I chose them for the best service and their reliability."
Long-Time Customer
O’Doherty, who has been a Volvo customer since the 1980s, chose the Volvo FMX primarily to meet emissions standards, but the company will see other benefits as well. The trucks will come in a day cab configuration with Thompson Loadmaster bodies as well as additional windows, mirrors, and cameras to meet FORS Gold accreditation standards. Although J. O’Doherty Haulage plans to perform all of the maintenance on its fleet of FMX 8x4 tippers, the trucks do have extended warranties.
