Unlike the DAF CF and LF, there has been plenty of previewed coverage about the setup of the new FM. It is being launched with a range of 11- and 13-litre Euro 6 engines. The D13 is available from 420hp to 500hp, while the D11 engine spans the power range from 330hp to 450hp.
"We have further refined our Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. The new Euro-6 engines offer excellent performance combined with high fuel-efficiency," says Astrid Drewsen, product manager for engines at Volvo Trucks.
New Features
Key new features for Volvo's new FM are an improved driver's cab and Volvo's Dynamic Steering option which will improve the truck's driving properties. Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Trucks said, "Volvo Dynamic Steering is a world-class technical innovation. It benefits the truck driver in all operating conditions by creating a safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable working environment. On the highway the dynamic steering system provides exceptional directional stability. At low speeds even a heavily-laden truck is so easily manoeuvrable that it can be steered with little effort."
Just as in the new FH, Volvo's ironmark logo has been moved up to a new position just below the windscreen.
The cab looks lower and more down-to earth with rear-sloping, aerodynamic rounded corners. A grab-handle is integrated into the front and the lower part of the grille can be folded down to form a broad step.
The new headlamps, with their distinctive lines, also emphasise the family ties with the new Volvo FH.
Volvo's confidence in the quality of the new FM combined with the option of telematics to monitor wear and the condition of certain key components means that the company can offer the truck owner a Gold service contract, including a maximum uptime guarantee. Production of the new Volvo FM gets under way for European customers in September 2013.
